Telangana Elections Latest News 2018

Telangana, India’s youngest state goes to election on December 7, 2018. 1,821 candidates will be battling for 119 assembly seats. The state was slated to go to the polls in 2019 along with the lok sabha elections. But Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao dissolved the assembly on September 6. A few hours after dissolving the assembly, KCR announced about 105 candidates for the 119 seats in the state. This gave the Telangana Rashtra Samiti a head start.

However, media reports suggested that Telangana Rashtra Samiti candidates faced opposition mainly because of the KCR government’s failure to fulfill poll promises. Prominent among them were the double bedroom scheme for the homeless and mission Bhagiratha which promised piped drinking water to every household in Telangana.

In the outgoing assembly, Telangana Rashtra Samiti had 90 seats, Congress had 13 seats, BJP had 11 seats and others had 11 seats. It must be noted Telangana Rashtra Samiti had 63 seats in 2014 and added 27 seats when defecting MLAs joined Telangana Rashtra Samiti to bring the total to 90 seats.

The BJP, which has a considerable support in urban centers is fielding its candidates in all of 119 assembly seats. In the outgoing house, it had 5 MLAs. The factor that is making the Telangana elections interesting is a Prajakutami or mahakutumi or the grand alliance. It is an alliance comprising of the Congress, the Telugu Desam Party, Telangana Jana Samithi and Communist Party of India. The Congress and the Telugu Desam Party joining hands have changed the equation for TRS and KCR who likely did not factor this alliance.

The importance of the grand alliance is that if it succeeds in Telangana, it can convince other opposition parties and gather momentum for an anti-BJP grand alliance for the 2019 lok sabha polls. At the same time, winning Telangana is important for KCR.

With high stakes, Telangana is witnessing a no holes barred campaign. Words are flying from all quarters. The election results which will be announced on December 11 will set the stage for 2019 lok sabha polls.
